Bihar (बिहार in Devanagri) is a state situated in the eastern part of India. Its capital is Patna. The name Bihar is a corruption of Vihara which means a Buddhist monastery.
It is bordered on the north by the Kingdom of Nepal. It is surrounded on its west, south, and east sides by the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal, respectively. Bihar lies in the very fertile Gangetic plains, and is part of the Hindi-speaking heartland of India.
